We wanted him to get Rachel. And not once did the show stop to ask whether he actually deserved her.

That is the lie almost every guy absorbs before he’s old enough to know it’s happening: be kind enough, patient enough, and available enough, and eventually she has to choose you. Do the nice-guy thing long enough and the universe pays out.

It doesn’t. And the reason why is the most useful thing I can hand you tonight.

The Guy Who Was “Always There” (And Why It Felt Off)

Look at what Ross actually does. He’s had a crush on Rachel since high school. Instead of telling her, he becomes her emotional support boyfriend, minus the boyfriend part. Always there to listen. Always there to save the day. Lets her win at poker when she’s down.

On paper, lovely. In practice, something’s off, and you can feel it even through a laugh track.

You really see it when Rachel starts dating other people and Ross sulks in the corner like her going out is a personal attack on him. Then she finally lands her dream job, and he doesn’t celebrate. He interrogates it. He decides her new boss must secretly want to sleep with her, because in Ross’s world no man is ever nice to a woman for free.

That is the tell. Ross can’t picture kindness without a bill attached, because his own kindness always had one. The listening, the comforting, the poker game he threw on purpose. None of it was free. It was a down payment. (He’s still my favorite character to watch… those facial expressions crack me the f up)

The Invisible Invoice Nobody Agreed To Pay

There’s a name for what Ross is doing, and once you learn it you will see it everywhere.

In No More Mr. Nice Guy, Dr. Robert Glover calls it a covert contract. It runs like this: I’ll do something for you (be nice, be helpful, put your needs first), and in return you’ll do something for me (like me back, sleep with me, make me feel whole). And neither of us will ever say any of this out loud.

The problem is baked right in. She never signed it. She doesn’t even know it exists. You wrote the terms, filed the invoice in your head, and quietly started running a tab.

So you keep being “nice.” You keep making deposits. A balance builds up that only you can see. Then one day she dates Paulo, or takes the job, or just calls you “such a good friend,” and in your mind the invoice comes due. You feel cheated. Resentful. Like she owes you.

She doesn’t. You billed a client who never hired you.

Same Guy, Different Lighting

The reason that horror movie Obsession works is that its “nice guy” is just Ross with the laugh track stripped out. Shy, sweet, in love with his friend, can’t say it. So he finds another way to make her love him. The second his “love” becomes about controlling her instead of respecting her actual choice, the romance curdles into something you want to look away from.

Ted Mosby ran the same tab with a soulmate story wrapped around it. Cameron in 10 Things I Hate About You: “I’m the nicer option, so she owes me.” Ducky treating friendship like a waiting room where his number eventually gets called.

Different characters, one contract: I was good to you, so now you’re mine.

This is where it stops being about your Netflix queue and starts being about your actual life. Women can feel the invoice. They can’t always name it, but they can absolutely feel the difference between a guy who’s kind because he’s kind and a guy who’s “nice” because he’s keeping score. The second one feels like an episode of Double Dare…slimy as hell!

The Part I Had To Learn The Hard Way

When I was 17, my girlfriend’s birthday was coming up and I decided to go all out. I found a way to get myself officially checked out of class for the day so I’d have hours to pull it off. She hated taking care of her fish and had once mentioned that baby turtles were cute. So I let myself into her house (with her parents permission), painstakingly captured all her fish and took them to a pet store, drained and cleaned out the tank, and rebuilt the whole thing into a desert terrarium with a baby tortoise inside, a pink bow tied around its tiny little shell. And that was just one gift. There was also a scavenger hunt, and flyers I hung up all over school. She and her friends thought it was the sweetest thing they had ever seen.

And then that same night, I got quietly, genuinely upset. Because after all of that, she didn’t fool around with me as much as I wanted. Read that sentence again, because it’s the whole enchilada. I hadn’t given her a birthday. I’d handed her an invoice with a cute little baby tortoise stapled to it, and when the balance didn’t get paid I felt cheated. I was 17, just running the script the culture handed me: do enough nice and romantic “things”, and you always get the girl (aka she does “nice” things for you in return). The problem is, she never signed up for any of that. She just thought her boyfriend did something really cute and nice because it was her birthday.

The Fix Isn’t “Be a Jerk.” It’s Drop the Contract.

The trap tricks guys into thinking the answer is to stop being kind. Wrong direction. Kindness was never the problem. The hidden invoice was.

Two moves fix it, and they’re both simple:

The Gift without a Hook. Do the kind thing only if you’d still do it knowing you’ll get nothing back. If the honest answer is “I wouldn’t help her move if I knew she’d never date me,” then you’re not being generous. You’re negotiating. Just don’t call it niceness.

Say the hard thing. The whole covert contract exists to dodge one scary sentence: “I like you. I’d love to take you out.” Ross could have skipped ten seasons of suffering by saying that in episode one and letting Rachel give a real answer. Being direct is scary for about four seconds. The secret tab is frustrating for years.

When you drop the invoice, something genuinely great happens. Your kindness becomes real, because it stops being a transaction. And your interest becomes clean, because you’re stating it instead of smuggling it in. People trust both of those on contact.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Your Mission This Week

Find one covert contract you’re running right now. Just one.

It might be romantic (the friend you’re secretly waiting on). It might have nothing to do with dating. The coworker you keep covering for while quietly expecting a favor back. The friend you always drive around, keeping a running total. The relative you help hoping they’ll finally approve of you.

Name the invoice. Then pick one of two things: either give the thing freely with zero expectation, or say what you actually want out loud. One or the other. No secret tab.

That’s the whole assignment. Pick one this week and try it.

Go find out what happens when your kindness has no strings attached to it. It’s a different life on the other side.

— Race

P.S. What’s a covert contract you’ve caught yourself running? Reply and tell me. Hundreds of guys, thousands of approaches, and the audience never once showed up to claim it.

The lie sounds true right up until you test it: that a room full of strangers is quietly watching you fail, and everyone’s keeping score.

Brad didn’t just decide that on a hunch. He went and ran the experiment on himself.

He Asked Eight Strangers If They Saw It

One night, Brad walked up to a woman at a bar and got blown out. Hard. The kind of rejection where your gut tells you to speed-walk to the parking lot and reconsider a few life choices on the drive home.

Instead, he turned to the guy standing about four feet away and asked, “Hey, did you see that?”

Guy barely looked up from his phone. “See what?”

Brad didn’t stop there. He asked eight different people in that bar the same question.

Zero of them had noticed. As far as that entire room was concerned, the rejection had never happened.

The Audience That Doesn’t Exist

There’s a real name for what happened in that bar. Psychologists call it the spotlight effect: the well-documented tendency for your brain to wildly overestimate how much other people notice or remember what you do.

Everyone in that room was the main character of their own night. Thinking about their drink order. Their ex. Whether their haircut looks weird under the bar lighting. (Somewhere in a psych lab, a researcher is very pleased with themselves for naming this. Spotlight effect. Very dramatic. A few friends and I ran something we called the Mick Jagger Challenge, named after that Maroon 5 song nobody could escape at the time. Anyone in the group could look at you, any time, anywhere, and say “do your best Mick Jagger.” No warning, no off limits. You had to drop whatever you were doing and bust out full Jagger moves for five to ten seconds.

We timed it for maximum damage. Mid-haircut. Crossing a busy intersection. Stuck in an elevator. And without fail, in front of a group of good-looking women. Every time. That was basically the whole point.

Almost nobody noticed. The rare person who did just laughed. And the built-in excuse (”he made me do it”) turned every ambush into an easy opener with whoever happened to be standing there.

That dumb game taught me the same thing Brad’s $400 proves with actual data: the only thing waiting on the other side of that fear is the exact thing you were too scared to go get.

Your Turn: One Room, This Week

You don’t need $400 on the table to run this. You need one moment of nerve and about thirty seconds right after it.

The challenge: next time you're out, do one small bold thing on purpose. Sing a line out loud, order the weirdest thing on the menu, or give a stranger a harmless compliment. Then look around. You'll have your own data point in under thirty seconds, no embarrassing rejection required.

Most of the time, nobody will even glance over. And on the rare occasion someone does, they’ll have forgotten about it before you’re two sentences into ordering your next drink.

That’s the whole experiment. It costs nothing, takes thirty seconds, and does more for your nerves than any pep talk, because you’re not taking my word for it. You’re taking your own.

Now go find out if anyone was actually watching.

Race

P.S. Reply and tell me what happened when you looked around. I read every one.

<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://datingadviceforhumans.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe You were nice. You talked about work, where you’re from, what show you’re both halfway through. You split the check. You hugged goodnight.

And then nothing. No spark. No second date. Just... fine.

I lived in that “fine” for years, so if that’s you right now, you’re in good company. (Hi. I’m Race. I write about dating and social skills for humans, which apparently needs specifying now.)

But what was actually happening at that table had a fix. And weirdly, it came from an 1868 dinner party.

Two People, One Table, Zero Connection

Both of you are performing.

She’s showing you her highlight reel. You’re showing her yours. Two people auditioning for each other across a table... and neither one is actually in the room.

I know because I was the king of it. I’d sit across from a girl and my brain would run a ticker tape the whole time: What do I say next? Is she bored? Was that joke funny? Do I ask about her job or is that lame?

Every single arrow pointing inward. At me.

And the wild part? She was doing the exact same thing. Wondering what I thought of HER. Worrying whether SHE was interesting enough.

Two people, both stuck in their own heads, both desperate to impress... and absolutely no one connecting.

The Princess Who Accidentally Solved Dating

Picture a dinner party in 1868. A princess gets seated next to two of the most powerful men in England on back-to-back nights: William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli. Both brilliant. Both gunning to be Prime Minister.

After her dinner with Gladstone, she said:

“I thought he was the cleverest man in England.”

After her dinner with Disraeli, she said:

“I thought I was the cleverest woman in England.”

Read those again. Same princess. Two very different versions of the night.

Gladstone impressed the daylights out of her. Disraeli made her feel like the most impressive person in the room... to herself.

Guess which one she couldn’t stop thinking about. Guess which one she was hoping would invite her out again.

Gladstone pointed the arrow inward, at how clever HE was. Disraeli flipped it outward. He was genuinely, ridiculously fascinated by HER.

(He also became Prime Minister twice and wrote romance novels on the side. A guy who spent his whole life making people feel like the main character... on the page and off it.)

People will forget what you say, but they’ll remember how you made them feel.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They point the arrow the other way.

They stop trying to be interesting and start being genuinely interested. And everything downstream of that changes. The conversation flows. She opens up. Time disappears. You walk away feeling like something real happened, because it did.

I call it providing a space. You’ve stopped performing, stopped scanning for your next line to impress her. You’re just giving her room to become the most alive version of herself... and getting a front-row seat while she does.

That is stupidly attractive, mostly because almost nobody bothers to do it anymore.

Your Mission This Week

One rep. That’s all I want from you.

Next time you’re talking to anyone... a date, a friend, the barista, your weird neighbor... look them in ONE eye and silently ask yourself:

“Who ARE you?”

Not as a judgment. As real, honest curiosity. Like they’re the most fascinating puzzle you’ve bumped into all week.

Watch what happens. Your questions get sharper. Your attention locks in. They start telling you things they don’t tell most people. And you both walk away lit up.

Try it once this weekend. One eye, one honest question, that’s it.

Go find out who they actually are.

— Race

P.S. You Own Three Pairs. Now What?

Picture it. She’s telling you about her shoe collection. A genuine, closet-has-its-own-zip-code situation.

You? You own three pairs. Two of them are the same sneakers. The soles are worn so thin you can basically feel the sidewalk say hello.

She’s also into volleyball. You played once on a random guy’s beach trip. (yes you did look like the scene in top gun.. high five)

She went to some school across the country you’ve honestly never heard of.

Old me would’ve panicked and reached for the eject button. Nothing in common... abort... talk about the weather... die alone.

Turns out I was building a bridge to the wrong place.

The Idea That Hit Me on a Train to Brighton Beach

This one clicked for me years ago, back when I lived in New York, careening through the underground on a train down to Brighton Beach with one of our interns.

Quick backstory. We were young, broke, and stupidly ambitious. We lived and worked out of the same space and could somehow run a full day on three hours of sleep. The night before, someone had invited a bunch of Swedish girls to a house party at our place, and there was a real language barrier in the room. The intern had watched me connect with them fast anyway.

So on the train he just asked me straight: how? How do you click with someone that quickly when you can barely trade full sentences?

And somewhere between stops, rattling through the dark with the lights flickering, I heard myself say it out loud for the first time:

We’re all islands of experiences.

Every person walking around has a completely unique pile of experiences. Even identical twins. You will never share the exact same set of experiences with another human, so if that’s the bridge you’re trying to build, it’s a dead end every single time.

But emotions are different. Emotions are the bridge that connects our different experiences.

I taught it to that intern right there in the New York underground, and it rewired how I talk to everybody since. Cashiers, strangers on planes, my dentist (sorry doc, you did not sign up for a philosophy seminar with your hands in my mouth).

The One Question That Builds the Bridge

Back to shoe girl.

She loves buying shoes. So instead of nodding along and quietly dying inside, you ask her the magic question:

“How do they make you feel?”

And she lights up. “They make me feel powerful. Confident. Like I can walk into any room and own it.”

There’s your bridge.

And you’ve felt every one of those. Not from shoes, obviously. But from finally hitting a lift you’d been chasing since March. From a presentation you were dead certain you’d bomb, right up until you didn’t. Powerful, confident, own-the-room... same feeling. You just took a totally different road to get there.

The shoes and the deadlift have nothing to do with each other. Doesn’t matter. That feeling underneath, the walk-in-and-own-it one, you both know it cold. And that’s the only part you actually need.

Same Feeling, Totally Different Story

Here’s a second one. Say you love to travel, and she tells you she’s honestly never really been anywhere.

Most guys bail right here. Dead end, next topic.

But don’t just say “I love traveling.” Tell her why:

“I love waking up with no idea what’s going to happen that day. Eating food I can’t pronounce. Being somewhere totally unfamiliar and just figuring it out as I go.”

Now she can meet you there. Even if her big adventure is working on her art projects in her room.

Her: in her room, music blaring, lost in the creation of her art.

You: backpacking through Southeast Asia, lost, sunburned, grinning like an idiot.

Two totally different lives, one feeling they both recognize. That’s the bridge, and it holds every single time.

The people who click with everyone aren’t luckier than you. They’re not more interesting than you either. They just quit digging for matching trivia and started listening for the feeling underneath.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" you can use tonight.

Here’s the scene: you’re at your favorite taco spot with some cutie you just met. A few feet away, a waiter clearing a table accidentally knocks a glass off the edge. Before it can hit the ground, his arm shoots out and catches it, pure reflex, like he’s Master Splinter. He looks down at his own hand like he can’t believe what just happened.

You both saw it. Your eyes meet. Neither of you says anything yet.

That two second window is worth more than the last twenty minutes of conversation you just had.

Why That Window Matters More Than Small Talk

There’s a name for what almost just happened between you two, and once you see it, you’ll notice it everywhere. It’s called a “We Joke.” (I like to pronounce it “Weeeeee!”) Spot a small, weird, or slightly annoying shared moment in the first few minutes with someone, then bring it back up later. Simple as that.

Here’s why it works on a level neither of you controls. When your brain recognizes a pattern, especially a private one only you and one other person share, it rewards itself with a small hit of endorphins. That hit gets tagged to whoever helped you notice the pattern in the first place. You both just won a game of endorphin tag. Noice! But it gets better…

Bring the reference back a second time, and the brain fires the reward again. A third time, and the person across from you isn’t a stranger anymore. They’re someone who already has an inside joke with you that nobody else in the room gets.

Building the Pillow Fort

Inside jokes are the foundation of every long relationship you’ve ever had. Best friends have them. Couples fifteen years in still have them. The only difference is those normally take months to build. You can build the same thing with a total stranger in five minutes. I call it a Pillow Fort: a private little world where only the two of you understand the reference. The second it exists, everyone else standing around you, including the guy with the lightning fast reflexes, is standing outside of it.

Here’s exactly how to build one:

Spot it. Something small, weird, or slightly annoying happening near you both in the first five - ten minutes. A bad song, a spilled drink, a bartender with an unfortunate mustache. It doesn’t need to be funny on its own.

Name it. Give it a ridiculous label out loud, together. “Okay, that’s officially the Duke of Mustache.”

Advanced: You can add onto it to make it even more memorable and more real. “He goes by `Stache to his close friends.“ or “His full title is His Royal Thickness, Saver of Crumbs, Duke of Mustache“ (think of Ted and Robin in How I Met Your Mother.. they have a lot of inside jokes like this...”Major Buzzkill” anyone?)

3. Callback it. Ten or fifteen minutes later, in a completely unrelated part of the conversation, bring it back. “Careful, don’t let the Duke hear you say that.“

4. Lock it in. Reference it once more before the night ends, ideally as you’re saying goodbye. “Don’t tell anyone else about the Duke of Mustache. I’m pretty sure he is in Witness Protection and we don’t want to blow his cover.“

(Small tangent: I’ve used a version of this with baristas, Uber drivers, and one memorable IKEA employee. It’s not just a dating move. It’s just how private jokes get born between any two people, on any timeline.)

By the third callback, you’re not a stranger anymore. You’re the person who’s already inside a joke with them that nobody else gets.

Your Mission This Week

Next time you’re out, whether it’s a date, a coffee shop, or standing in line somewhere, find one small, weird, mildly annoying thing happening near you and someone else. Name it out loud together. Bring it back up twice before you two part ways.

Keep the bar low. One weird moment, named out loud, referenced twice. Nothing more complicated than that.

Go have some fun with this.

R. A. DePriest

P.S. Reply and tell me what your Pillow Fort ended up being called. I read every one.

Subscribe now
